Kristijonas Donelaitis: The Cycle of Seasons and Writings
The subject of the virtual exhibition entitled "Kristijonas Donelaitis: The Cycle of Seasons and Writings" is the life, work and literary legacy of this classic Lithuanian author. The exhibition features key documents kept in the holdings of the project promoters‘ institutions: the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore and the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. It also showcases several documents from the Prussian Privy State Archives (Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin); their copies are published here with permission. Some archival documents are being published for the first time.
Kristijonas Donelaitis has been a subject of much writing and study; both his person and his literary characters have been depicted in numerous art works (graphic art, music, theatre). It is hard to encompass all this in a virtual exhibition, so we will only touch upon the main issues that throw light on the poet‘s life, original writings, translations of his work into various foreign languages, research and dissemination of his writing, and preservation of his legacy.
This virtual exhibition introduces the project "Written Heritage and Kristijonas Donelaitis", partially funded by the Commission for the Preservation of Lithuanistic Traditions and Heritage and implemented by the Wroblewski Library of the Academy of Sciences (WLLAS) in 2012. The project is planned to continue; its further implementation should include the launch of a transportable exhibition. The project partners are the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore (ILLF) and the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania (MMNLL). The project officer is Dr. Rima Cicenienė (WLLAS), and the project promoters are Dr. Daiva Narbutienė, Erika Kuliešienė, Audronė Steponaitienė, Egidijus Gotalskis, Ana Venclovienė (WLLAS), Dr. Mikas Vaicekauskas (ILLF) and Jolita Steponaitienė (MMNLL), photographs by Sigitas Narbutas (WLLAS).
The organizers of the exhibition appeal to the community (researchers and popularizers of Donelaitis‘ work, institutions holding unique Donelaitis-related artifacts) with the request to provide documentary and iconographic materials concerning the preservation and propagation of the legacy of Donelaitis.
